Hygiene and Dignity: Bathroom Upgrades at Westham and Groutville

At The Sprout Foundation, we believe that creating meaningful change in schools goes beyond classrooms and academic resources. A safe, clean and dignified school environment plays an important role in how learners experience school each day.

That is why improving school ablution facilities has become an important part of our 2026 hygiene and dignity initiatives. This year, we have been working to improve bathroom facilities at two of our partner schools in KwaZulu-Natal: Westham Secondary School and Groutville High School.

Westham Secondary School

At Westham Secondary, our work forms part of our ongoing commitment to improving the school’s facilities and creating a more welcoming environment for learners and educators.

As part of our 2026 school upgrade projects, the school’s bathrooms received much-needed attention. The project included preparation and high-pressure cleaning of the main bathroom areas, followed by painting to give these shared spaces a cleaner, brighter and more welcoming appearance.

The project also formed part of our Mandela Day initiatives, with dedicated volunteers from Alpha generously giving their time to assist with the painting and improvement work.

While a bathroom may seem like a small part of a school, it is a space used by hundreds of learners every day. Ensuring that these facilities are clean, functional and well maintained is therefore an important investment in the overall school environment.

Groutville High School

With approximately 2,800 learners, Groutville High School serves a large learner population with only 24 toilet stalls. The pressure placed on the school’s ablution facilities highlighted the need for both refurbishment and additional capacity.

Through our partnership with Groutville, five ablution blocks were refurbished.

The renovation addressed a range of essential infrastructure needs, including repairs to toilets, replacement of damaged pipework and flushing system, installation of new taps, replacement of damaged doors, painting and general refurbishment, restoration of four external toilet stalls.

Restoring the four external stalls also increased the school’s available toilet capacity by four units – a small but important improvement for a school serving thousands of learners.

Supporting Hygiene Beyond the Renovations

Improving school bathrooms is only one part of creating healthier and more dignified school environments. Having clean and functional facilities also means ensuring that schools have access to the everyday hygiene essentials learners need.

As part of our broader hygiene initiatives, we were incredibly grateful to partner with Alpha BPO, whose staff came together to collect and donate more than 12,000 toilet rolls our partner schools.

This generous contribution will help ensure that learners have access to an essential hygiene item across our schools, while also supporting the ongoing maintenance and use of the improved facilities.

More Than Just Bathrooms

Projects like these are about much more than paint, plumbing and new fittings.

For learners, having access to clean, functional and well-maintained ablution facilities can contribute to a greater sense of dignity, comfort and pride in their school.

Infrastructure projects can sometimes be overlooked when we think about education. But a school cannot function effectively without the basics. Safe classrooms, functioning bathrooms, reliable water and access to essential hygiene supplies all form part of creating an environment where children can learn, grow and feel valued.

At The Sprout Foundation, we are incredibly grateful to the donors, partners, volunteers and school communities who make projects like these possible.

Together we are helping schools to create facilities where learners can learn with dignity, pride and confidence.
