Sometimes, making a difference means going back to where it all began.
When The Sprout Foundation first started working with Isihlangusabasha Primary School in 2020, we were only just beginning our journey as an organisation. One of the early projects we supported at the school was the installation of fans to help improve ventilation and comfort in the classrooms.
Fast-forward several years, and those same fans had started showing the wear and tear that comes with being used every school day.
Rather than replacing them completely, we recently went back to the school to repair and restore the existing fans, giving them a new lease on life.
A Small Project With a Big Story
For us, this project was particularly meaningful because these fans are a reminder of just how far our partnership with Isihlangusabasha has come.
When they were originally installed in 2020, The Sprout Foundation was still finding its feet. We were a much smaller organisation, learning as we went and trying to identify practical ways we could support our partner schools.
The fans were one of those early projects.
Today, our relationship with Isihlangusabasha has grown into a long-term partnership, with our work extending across a range of areas including feeding programmes, support for orphaned and vulnerable learners, educational resources and school infrastructure improvements.
Returning to repair something we helped install in those early days felt like a full-circle moment.
Why Classroom Comfort Matters
It is easy to underestimate the impact that something as simple as a functioning fan can have in a classroom.
Learners spend hours at school every day, and educators spend even longer teaching and preparing. In warm, sumemer conditions, uncomfortable classrooms can make it more difficult for learners to concentrate and for educators to teach effectively.
Ensuring that existing infrastructure remains functional is therefore an important part of maintaining a positive learning environment.
And importantly, repairing rather than replacing also allows limited resources to go further.
From 2020 to Today 🌱
Looking back, it is incredible to think that something we did in the early days of The Sprout Foundation is still part of our work today.
We are grateful to Isihlangusabasha Primary for allowing us to walk alongside their school community over the years, and to every donor and supporter who has made it possible for us to continue responding to the school’s needs.
Here’s to many more years of partnership, progress and impact. 💚
